So, I'm thinking of trying to cobble together a Best Of Chic Alors 1997-2007 fanzine for the London Zine Symposium, wading through to find the best bits of these interviews:

PLUS: Unpublished interviews with Robyn, Dragonette, Hey Willpower, Raymond & Maria, numerous ridiculous features and I'm possibly writing 2 new ones, 'Jean Genet - from the footnotes of queer cabaret', and 'My Life On The G-List', a four-years-at-Gay-Times memoir....

I'm just putting it out there so see if a) anyone would want a copy and b) force myself to making it happen.

2010, the year of learning Hebrew and loving pop music

This year, I took Hebrew classes, and my tastes in terrible pop music started to plumb new depths. My Hebrew teacher has been trying to get us to learn this song, which makes her eyes glaze over - she's lovely, honest. But in my own time I've actually be learning this song, which has far more poignant (and useful) lyrics:

My taste in Hebrew pop is quite "Frecha" which is sort of like bimbo/chav/etc as I've become obsessed with the decidedly sexist Kol Hanasheem Yafot (well, the remix) Which is basically, "All the beautiful women" :(, a bit of Sarit Hadid who covered The Frecha Song, and the Sugababes-esque Javine-covering Roni 'Superstar' Duani, who makes brilliant eurovisiony trash pop:

My threshold for bubblegum pop music tends to treble when sung in another tongue, as I realised when I set out to DJ at the start of the year, only playing non-english lyrics. 2010 was also the year that I picked up some tunes from Russia and Malta - which may appear in different posts...

Band of the day type thing. Lovers have cropped up in a few 'queer tracks of the year' type blogs so I had a listen. They sound like a couple of my favourite artists mushed into one (they look like one too, DiFranco t-shirt aside) - namely The Blow and Tender Forever - and are very enjoyable indeed.

In other just-listening to news, the new Hercules and Love Affair album is a bit of a let down, aside a few Aurthur Russel diversions. But the new Lykke Li album is pretty good, if a total Phil Spector hand-me-down, mixed with a healthy dose of woe-is-me. Look out for Sadness Is A Blessing, one of the few tracks interrupting my Robyn binges.

Festive Film Big Willy / Ugly Betty Style

Christmas Films - RUBBISH. Except perhaps Female Trouble. Last night I watched none-such an exception, A Divas Christmas Carol. Mostly - well, only - because the main character is a Wilhlmina Slater prototype, and those of you that know me will know I over project onto Ugly Betty, and can even sit through the terrible mid season slump episodes.

I interviewed one of the main characters - okay actors, though there wasn't much difference - the other day and seem to be working my way through the cast. Last month I met Marc St James (well, Michael Urie - they even wear the same clothes.)

Anyway as a tolken gesture to the festive season I moaned my way though 88 minutes (it feels a lot longer) of the afore mentioned film. There were a couple of great lines, but everything you don't need to know about the film is contained in this one hit:

The strangest thing about watching this documentary about Stephin Merritt and The Magnetic Fields is that is does nothing - NOTHING - to diminish my love for the man/band. Even though he is clealy someone I couldn't stand being friends with. Depsite my best efforts. But he seems happy in his own protected unhapiness. Who am I to say, it's only a documentary of highly edited moments... their songs are the thing here. No matter how much I want to project icon status, or weird sexual father figure stuff on the man.

MILK the film was amazing and made me cry, i sat right next to my editor and we both left sniveling. I probably would've sobbed uncontrollably if i were alone. Gay Pride: 10/10

MILKE the electropop outfit are releasing Love Get Out Of My Way, which is in no way tear inducing, albeit very listenable. The Designer Drugs Remix is pretty good. Gay Pride: 4/10

Candy Club’s Queer Beats was Uh-mazing.
My Robot Friend’s roborgasm + blue fingers, Peaches and the drunk go-go, Scott Matthew’s “Remix”, Dancing with Dance Yourself To Death and Carmen’s Cumshot/Johnny’s everything’s-okay-hand-vogue, The Ballet and their all encompassing cuteness and of course, as ever, Thomas Lechner’s impeccable hospitality and awesome Djing/organisation of the whole thing. As I said to several people from several massive cities, there is nowhere else that mixes so many different gays’n’queers with that amount of amazing bands. Uh-mazing.

She's only gone an fiddled with Katy Perry. Taking the one good track off the album, Hot N Cold, a universal truth confirmed by every pop blog ever, and turning it into a sortof rubbish new rave semi mash up mix.

Yelle's uber cute "you 'ot 'ot 'ot den you cowd cowd cowd" only goes to emphasise how annoying KPs vocals are.

What Yelle should've done is scrapped all of Perrys vocals, resung the whole thing, tried to somehow fit their own chorus into the song so it doesnt sound like a bootleg, changed that awful lyric about changing your mind like a girl changes clothes, thrown in a few more handclaps and have a stupid loud snare-led crescendo into a thirty second rave ahoy a la a cause de garcons.

There are two things keeping me awake til 2:27am

One is Songbird. Its like a firefox browser than automatically rounds up all the possible mp3s you can download on a website, and puts them in a little player so you can hear them before downloading. So for example, popping over to fluxblog.org i skip everything but Jensen Sportag (sort of kitsch male swedish sounding vocal sound that im loving at the moment) and Junesex who sound like Rauberhole.

The second is: What is queer pop? I was djing at a queer clubnight the other week, and the thought gave me some bother. How far can irony save classic "gay" pop (i'm thinking YMCA, Its Raining Men, and others from 'the canon') and how responsible is a queer club in providing alternative music, rather than wedding/school/gay disco fodder? I love cheesey pop, but it's sickening in huge chunks. Who am I to say that one kind of kitsch is better than another? I love hearing Queen records in some context, but between Jackson 5 or S Express it looses something. Why do i get the feeling no one wants to hear/dance to a song they've never heard before? What bothers me is that everyone was dancing. Nearly Everyone. Which hardly ever happens when I play. Maybe shitdisco is the new queer if we've all alternatived eachother out. I'm abusing words now. Stuck On Repeat

I've been listening to Rosie and the Goldbug 'You've Changed' (Dumb Dan Edit) all day. its ace. it sounds like gwen/cyndi/kate-b-ish vocals over an Eric Prydz dance track. That's better than it sounds, and Eric pops up in the press release for absolutely no reason. Oh, so does Cyndi. And Kylie. And Madonna. And Daft punk, justice, shakespeares sister, bjork, the killers, alicia keys, shakira, new order, all in bold so i dont have to look up why they are there. But the song is amazing has not deteriorated on repeat listening.

In other good music news, the Yo Majesty sleeve is AWESOME. I'm gonna see them tonight at Barfly. Hurrah, etc.

guilty pleasures II

i quite like some Bimbo Jones stuff.

It's awful, painfully, screamingly gay music that channels everything camp about disco, electro, every genre of dance music ever even funky house - which is possibly the most repugnant formulaic music ever made.

But I like it. I like it in the same way I used to secretly listen to the non-stop Almighty Remixes on the Queer As Folk soundtrack that I taped from the library, which i would listen to, absolutely ridden with GUILT. I'd use headphones so it couldnt be heard to anyone else but me. I felt guilty twice fold; it was a dirty gay faggy cd and is was cheap, generic lowest-common-demoninator electro pop music - all the stuff I listened to at this time was guitar based britpop.

And the other thing I've been thinking about, especially after a weekend of voguing in liverpool, is how i've been dressing up more on some nights out and what magpie tastes I have in loving anything with sequins on. And how abosrb guilt about dragging up or being too glittery. I love doing it, but I'm scared to do it more than i do, yet i've nothing inside me which feels guilty but every time I'm reminded of how its only okay to do it as a performance, as a OTT stereotype drag queen. (comment at the bar: "Oh you're so brave to dress like that" i couldn't get any explanation of of him aside that he'd probably fancy me "as a boy" ) and even work mates or flatmates gently police me with comments of 'you're so crazy' or making jokes about stuff i wear, but each time it's like traffic warden slapping a parking ticket on me. Subconsciously I absorb that I'm not supposed to park there. In public there is less gentility, like when buying a drink in my local corner shop the guy is so horrified by my glittery red nails its like he doesnt want to take my money in case wearing nailvarnish is infectious and literally drops the change in my hand.

anyway its nearly 2am on a sunday evening, i'm having a weird bout of exhausted restlessness and was drawn blogward... I'm blaming 5 hours on a train, then 7 hours in heels, then 5 hours on a train...

It's often kept me awake at night, wondering what happened to none-hit wonder, Verbalicious. (Don’t Play Nice) Well after some bed ridden youtubing, I've found out. She's Natalia Cappuccini and she's a shoppaholic. It gets worse:

Oh Verbalicious, what happened?!

She ditched verbalicious to be VERSE (which appears to have been marketed to France for some reason. She doesn't sing a note in French) but wasn’t really feeling it, wanted to be called VERBZ, but someone has the copyright. What the hell was wrong with VERBALICIOUS?! No one is going to steal that name. In July this year she auctioned a load of her shit (not literally) on ebay. Like, sunglasses, trainers, her bike…. Things are tough.

A workmate once casually mentioned he played a police officer in a Huggy Bear video and I thought nothing of it, mentally casting in aside as a nice, pre-internet anecdote, as accessible as if he'd said "I used to do a fanzine, once..." AND THEN I accidentally came across it on youtube:

In that there's this incredible past of cultural activism, that I've only really followed in retrospect or caught the tail end of, and yet... and yet it's so UNFINISHED. These amazing creative women and men creating really vital exciting stuff as a reaction to all the mediocrity and crap that surrounds them and is offered by mainstream culture and I'm reading these - essentially 'historical' (well, over a decade old) interviews and it depressing because it feels like almost nothing has changed. I have to check the dates to make sure that ten years has past, because I'd love to see or hear people doing or saying the same things today (I know they are, but it's harder to see it under your nose without the rose tinted spectacles of nostalgia) And it also excites and inspires me to know that these incredible networks were set up and are still running and do still exist and... and... and I need to get off my arse and do something.
